Perry Hutchinson

Perry’s started his career in the early 1980’s as Electrical Project Engineer for Nu Con (now GEA Nu Con), designing and commissioning controls for pneumatic conveying systems.  In 1984 Perry joined the major expansion of the New Zealand Steel Mill at Glenbrook, initially as site engineer for one of the main contractors and then for the client, New Zealand Steel Development Ltd.  This was a massive project employing over 750 electricians at its peak.

Upon completion of this project in 1987, Perry launched his own industrial electrical contracting business, specialising in design/build and PLC automation projects.  Clients included Fletcher Wood Panels, Atlas Concrete , New Zealand Wire and BP.  In 1989 the business was appointed as the Allen Bradley distributor for the Auckland North region.

Perry sold the business in 1993 to take up an assignment with Beca based in Jakarta.  Beca was engaged on several projects for the PT Inco Nickle Smelter in Sulawesi .  Perry was involved as lead electrical engineer, carrying out electrical and automation design and commissioning.

In 1995 Perry joined Bechtel for the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter Expansion as Project Manager for the rodding room upgrade.  Upon completion of this project in 1996, Perry returned to New Zealand Steel as an electrical commissioning engineer  on the Kilns Co-generation project.  At that point he commenced study towards an MBA (Technology Management).

Towards the end of 2000, Perry joined Refrigeration Engineering , initially as electrical estimator, but upon completion of his MBA, manager of the Electrical Division.  In 2003, Perry was promoted to General Manager (Industrial Refrigeration).

In 2007 Perry joined the highly successful BCS Group as General Manager.  During this time BCS expanded into the North American baggage handling market, consolidated its position as market leader in Australia and diversified into parcel handling systems.

Perry launched Synergy Solutions Ltd in 2010 with the aim of helping technology contracting businesses achieve sustainable growth.  He has a clear understanding of what it takes to survive and thrive as a technology contractor, bringing  with him a wealth of experience gained both at the “coal face” and in senior management positions.
